The City of Saratoga Springs needs clear, focused, and rational goals to continue to reestablish itself and begin to thrive again. The unique form of government enables the Mayor to lead
multiple departments which includes Recreation, Building / Planning / Zoning, Community Development, and Human Resources. Though the Mayor may not have direct control over vital services, I will be able to be an influential collaborator to move initiatives forward that make Saratoga Springs a better place for everyone.
Our Recreation Department is essential to the successful growth and vitality of the city. My initiatives include expanding after school programming for our youth, expanding summer programming, increasing adult recreational opportunities, and securing additional space/land to incorporate new programming. One of my goals is to incorporate the arts into recreation that are affordable for all families in Saratoga Springs. The arts programming will include visual, creative, and performing arts.
Though the Mayor does not have direct authority over the Police, Fire, and Code Enforcement, I have spent my entire career collaborating to achieve team objectives. There is no question that
changes are needed. My goal is to work with the Public Safety Commissioner to create innovative, adaptive, and fair solutions to our public safety concerns.
Having served for many not-for-profits, crime victims and potential crime victims have the right to have police available in their community. It is beneficial to consider any of the practical
solutions that have been brought forth by the Saratoga Springs Police Reform Task Force. This task force has been diligently researching to provide the council with the most effective solutions for Saratoga Springs. I will continue to work with the Police Chief and Public Safety
Commissioner to create viable solutions to issues of concern in our community.
As your Mayor, I will complete the Eastern Ridge Fire House on Henning Road. Though this project is already approved, it has not been completed and the time clock is ticking. I will bring
this project to completion and ensure our residents on the Eastern Ridge have efficient access to vital services to keep them safe.
We currently have extensive community development programs within the City, but there is not enough awareness. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has required Saratoga Springs to have approximately 180 unities of affordable housing. We have over 500 (built and proposed) units that are classified as ‘Affordable Housing’ or ‘Workforce Housing’ and are income qualified through HUD standards within the department. I will work to
increase awareness of the City’s programs that currently exist and work to expand our staffing in this department (currently one employee managing approximately 10 programs) to ensure
increased resident and business access to programs.
GREEN AND OPEN SPACE SUSTAINABILITY: Our open and green spaces are vital to keep
the character of Saratoga Springs. I support the County and State Trail Programs, including the
expansion of the Zim Smith Trail into the City. Our City is already a Certified Bronze Climate Smart Community and I plan to continue to drive these initiatives to meet the Certified Silver level. Updating the Open Space Plan, which was last completed in 2002, is vital to maintaining our open and green spaces. I will ensure the Open Space Plan Steering Committee has the resources they have to complete the update of this plan.
BUILDING/PLANNING/ZONING: The growth of Saratoga Springs, and the County as a whole, is beyond any pre-COVID prediction. As we continue to grow as a community, I will work to make sure our Zoning Board, Planning Board, and Design Review Committees are inclusive of members from all areas of our community. Each neighborhood and district within the City has unique needs and characteristics that we must respect.
I will continue to work on implementing appropriate technology and personnel to expedite the process as a whole for applicants. Building growth is a natural progression of any municipality
and it is my job to ensure the smart growth that maintains the character and charm of our community.
DOING BUSINESS IN THE CITY
The role of Mayor includes duties of appointing members to our many Boards and I will continue to fill vacancies with the highest caliber of professionals to add to the team. These Boards guide the development of Saratoga Springs.
Build the internal systems is one of the ways the Mayor can improve businesses in the City. Through using data analytics that have already been implemented in the Building and Planning
Departments, we can continuously assess and identify the deficiencies.
As an owner of three business on Broadway and 30+ year member of the Downtown Business Association, Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, and Discover Saratoga I am deeply aware of the needs of small businesses. Our community organizations do an incredible job at working to recruit new businesses and sustain them. It is my belief that a critical role of the Mayor is to work diligently to support the businesses in the City limits to encourage job growth and smart
